A passion for textiles and a finely-tuned mastery of colour are the hallmarks of Kate Stuart’s look. A signature "Kate" space is realized when a mix of contemporary and antique upholstery and fine case goods are combined with luxurious fabrics and dressmakers details to create classically beautiful yet fresh interiors. Kate’s international perspective on design developed through a diverse portfolio of projects in Canada, the U.S.A, and Britain.
Known for her focused attention to detail and her versatility with projects of all scope and size, Kate has tackled nearly every budget level and all kinds of demanding challenges, but as the Mom of three active young boys, Kate has learned to master that most elusive of designer goals; durable, family-friendly interiors that never suffer a lack of comfort and sophistication – proving that you really can have it all! Since Kate and Sarah share a seamlessly endless enthusiasm for fabric and a similar outlook on colour palettes and pattern, Kate has worked alongside Sarah to realize the dream of creating product lines that capture the signature "Sarah" look. With the line for Kravet Fabrics completed, Kate is helping with other new product categories while continuing to tackle a growing client roster.
Kate's work has been featured in international shelter publications including Canadian House and Home, Renovation Style and Style at Home. She was a cast member for 3 seasons on HGTV's Design Inc., and has been featured in too many blogs to mention! When not hard at work on her latest design project, Kate spends time with her guys; husband Tim and boys Owen, Finn and Kai…as often as possible on the white sand beaches of south Florida.
Kate's Design Equation:
BLUE! Always has been, always will be.
BEST DESIGN BARGAIN YOU BOUGHT FOR YOUR HOME
An old sofa that belonged to Sarah. It’s been reupholstered twice and is still going strong in spite of the three monkeys jumping on it!
FAVOURITE ROOM TO DECORATE? WHY?
I love to decorate kids bedrooms. It allows for a creativity of ideas and colours that aren’t allowed anywhere else. The stakes are low but the payoff is high!
FAVOURITE SPACE YOU'VE DESIGNED
The flat in London, England. It was an experience of a lifetime and allowed me to pretend now and then that I lived a different life.
FAVOURITE DESIGN PERIOD/MOVEMENT
Right now because I get to be a part of it.
FIRST DESIGN MEMORY?
Collecting paint chips on frequent trips to Beaver Lumber. I kept them in a box under my bed and would spend hours organizing and re organizing them.
WHERE ARE YOU MOST INSPIRED?
Sitting on the beach in Florida. It drives me crazy, as soon as I am relaxed I feel inspired and want to get right back to work!
“Rock Steady” by Aretha Franklin
MOVIE I COULD WATCH OVER AND OVER AND OVER...
It’s a tie. It’s either “The Goonies “ because I have always wanted to go on an adventure like that or “ The English Patient”, it’s just so darn romantic
IF SRD HAD A BAND, WHAT INSTRUMENT WOULD YOU BE PLAYING?
I’d be a back up singer. An integral part of the song but happy to be among friends in the background.
