I’ve always loved searching for one-of-a-kind antiques. If you were to go back through all of the rooms I’ve designed over the past 20 years, you would definitely be hard pressed to find even one that didn’t include a unique piece of refinished furniture! From newly upholstered chairs to freshly painted chests, I firmly believe that including a classic piece of furniture is a great way to take any room from cookie cutter to contemporary.

When you stumble upon a great vintage piece, you can feel the creativity kick in and - for me - start dreaming up ways to incorporate it into your desired space. Most of the time, a fresh coat of paint, new hardware or some pretty patterned fabric for upholstery is all you need to go from shabby to chic. The best part? The price tag - what you save in money you get back in character.

It really is true - one man’s 'trash' CAN be another man’s treasure, and I’m a sucker for the thrill of the hunt. While I have some great local shops I frequent for second-hand furnishings, spending time searching for the perfect vintage accent is not a luxury I have. Let’s be real  - I’m a wife, a mom of two girls, and I have a full time job that too often feels like 10 rolled into one. That’s why I love letgo - that super simple and convenient new app that connects you to local buyers and sellers of second-hand stuff. It’s like finding out your neighbour is getting rid of a side table you didn’t even realize you needed to finish your new living room. In my world, that’s reason enough to do a little happy dance.

Letgo App

So stop what you’re doing, pick up your phone and do the following:

  1. Download letgo from your app store. It's one of the top shopping apps in Canada right now.
  2. Browse the "Home and Garden" category or search for keywords like "coffee table, "dresser," "vintage" or "antique." Then grab a cup of tea and look through the results.
  3. When you spot a piece that appeals to you, you can chat instantly with the seller right in the app to arrange pickup and payment, and voila! You're a digital vintage bargain hunter.

It really is that easy - and so much fun! Check out some of my recent letgo finds and see how I’d apply a little polish to shine these diamonds in the rough!
