If your room has awkward proportions and you are having trouble finding just the right area rug, why not go for a custom template? Broadloom off the roll can be cut to size and templated to fit around a hearth or other architectural feature to give you better use of the available floor space for furniture layouts. In this family room it made all the difference!
What size should your area rug be? When selecting an area rug or carpet I generally allow about 12"-14" around the perimeter of the room. If your carpet is too small it will look like a postage stamp on the floor, and a larger carpet will help the room look bigger.
